Zoo Offers Shelter From the Cold

November 10, 2008 – Chicago winters are long and cold; I don’t need to tell you that. One of my survival tips for these long winters may surprise you. To keep from feeling like a brown bear hiding away until spring comes, I pack up the kids and head to the zoo!

One of my favorite places to take the kids is to Brookfield Zoo. With a family membership we’re able to visit the animals often and visits cut short by tired kids never seem like a wasted visit. If you don’t want to splurge and purchase a membership I suggest visiting the zoo on either a Tuesday or Thursday now through the end of the year – it’s free for everyone!

Don’t let a cold day stop you from visiting. The Hamill Family Play Zoo is an excellent place to spend some time. The Play Zoo is set up with multiple rooms for children to pretend, play, and explore. There’s also a do-it-yourself face painting station and live animals on exhibt. My favorite are the lemurs – your children can dress up like a lemur, watch the lemurs, and climb around the pretend trees (just like a lemur would do)!

Other indoor attractions include Tropic World, The Swamp, Feathers and Scales, Seven Seas, Perching Bird House, The Living Coast, Fragile Desert, and The Fragile Rain Forest. There’s plenty to do on a cold (or rainy) day at the zoo without freezing your tails off! (Of course, if you’re able to put up with the cold be sure to visit the polar bears – I’ve heard they’re pretty active with the cold weather, but usually can’t brave it long enough to visit them.)
