Sept. 15, 2008  – As a Mom, I try my very best in feeding my children the healthiest and most balanced meals at home. But as soon as they go off to school and I am off to wherever I need to be, I mostly grab a black Venti Americano from Starbucks and run to somewhere else for food. At most times, it is the nearest place that is walkable from Starbucks. And almost every single time, it is something that I probably should not eat.

Well yesterday I was invited to a Starbucks’ Healthy Breakfast Launch in Piper’s Alley here in Chicago (which is by the way a 24 hour Starbucks). A small group of bloggers and some Starbuck’s corporate staff was there for us to take a sampling of their newest healthy offerings and options.

According to their press release:

“The new breakfast assortment is the next step in the company’s commitment to providing food and beverage selections that support a healthy lifestyle. All of the items are made with high-quality, wholesome ingredients such as:

– Whole grains
– Real fruit
– Nuts and seeds
– Healthy fats such as Omega-3s

Additionally, these products contain no artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners or high fructose”

Ok, knowing those alone – my guilt factor has gone down considerably! I can finally indulge on something healthy for my kids and myself. But wait, for food allergy parents (I can imagine you raising your hands out there), one great thing to know is that the nuts let’s say in their new Perfect Oatmeal (yes, oatmeal!) or the peanut butter spreads are sealed and separated in a packet.

And yes, I know — but is it good? I must say that I am impressed. The selections from Perfect Oatmeal, Power Protein Plate, Baked Berry Stella, Apple Bran Muffin, Chewy Fruit & Nut Bar, and Multigrain Roll were all really very good! However, Chewy Fruit & Nut Bar is my favorite.

How much is it did you say? The 330 calorie/16 grams of protein/ 5 grams of fiber Power Protein Plate which comes with a hard-boiled egg, whole heat bagel, 70-calorie pack of peanut butter, cheese, apples, and grapes cost is $4.95 and the Perfect Oatmeal with a choice of Dried Fruit, Nut Medley, or Brown Sugar is $2.45. Both are the most expensive of their newest selections. The rest are averaging $1.75. I think that for what they have to offer, they are all moderately priced.

So what you are waiting for?! You know you want to run and head on to Starbucks, so go!

I have become obsessed with the new treats!! My twist on the classic PB&J, I have the multigrain roll sliced and toasted and I slather 2 packets of almond butter on one side and 2 packets of preserves on the other. ROCKS & satisfies for hours and hours.

The oatmeel is so much better when you tell them to use milk instead of water, plus you get calcium.
