Fall brings so many wonderful things.  Cooler temps, pumpkins, hoodie sweatshirts…  I love getting outside this time of year and enjoying the sunshine and brisk air.  It is almost as if I am like a squirrel getting ready for winter.  Though I am stocking up on fresh, non-arctic, air instead of nuts.  Both are for survival though.

One of my favorite outdoor spots, whether it be warm or cold, is the Morton Arboretum in Lisle.  And this time of year, it is especially beautiful there.  The changing leaves and fall decorations all around make you feel like you have walked into a harvest wonderland!  My boys (1 and 3) love the children’s garden and all there is to do there. And the animal houses are super cool too!  But right now, our favorite thing to do is the scarecrows.  If you haven’t done it yet, you gotta get out there soon.  They are fabulous!

As part of the Fall Color Festival at the Arboretum, different school groups and Girl Scout troops from around the Chicagoland area decorate scarecrows.  Some are fall-themed, some tell a familiar story like Charlotte’s Web or Wizard of Oz, and some are dressed like popular kids’ celebrities like Hannah Montana.  All 37 scarecrows are displayed around Meadow Lake, just next to the visitor’s center and restaurant.  Our favorites were “Yogi Ar-bear-etum” and “A Habitat for Everyone” with dozens of a painted birdhouses all over.  But they are all great and so fun to look at.  One was a diver, one was a princess, one was even Kermit the Frog.  The groups who decorated them did such and amazing job.

With a group of 5moms and 10kids, it took us just about an hour to walk around the lake and look at all the scarecrows (including the time we spent chasing some children and soothing others).  With just me and my two boys, it took about 40minutes at a leisurely pace- the perfect fall walk.  As you enter the path around the lake, be sure to grab a ballot form so you can vote for your favorite once you have seen and enjoyed them all.  They will draw a winner each week (5winners total) from the submitted ballots and giveaway a sherpa-lined hoodie to each winner.  I think the winning scarecrow gets a prize too.

The scarecrows at the Arboretum will stay up until November 1.  They are creative and whimsy and get you in the fall-spirit.  Go check it out and pick your favorite one… or two.
