Renegade Handmade Packs It All In

Are you always looking for items that no one else may have? Then I suggest that you head on over to Renegade Handmade in Wicker Park. Renegade Handmade is a great place to come when you are looking for anything unique, fun, and even kitschy. The bright and airy shop is a delightful mash-up of casual tees, painted plates, slightly cute greetings cards, beautiful jewelry, children’s wall art, and SO MUCH MORE. In fact, the store features items from over 300 artists and everything in there is handmade!

When I first walked in, I honestly didn’t know where to start, so I just started walking around. Although there is plenty to look at, the store doesn’t feel cluttered or overwhelming. Upon entering, you are greeted by a wall of totes and handbags and great belts. Whether you need something for work or a larger tote for a day at the beach, it can be found in this collection.

The store contains a collection of casual tees for men, women, and children. All of the tees are super soft, and according to the staff, the children’s items are very popular. I could totally see why! I captured a couple of cute toddler shirts by “We Are Casual” in the photo below! Also, in the picture are some more of those great tote bags that I mentioned earlier. These bags, created by Megan Lee Designs, represent Midwest pride in a very cute way. Perfect for us Chicagonistas!

I wouldn’t worry too much if you don’t know your artists or if you have questions. The staff is very knowledgeable about the collections, including the artists’ backgrounds. If you find a collection that you like, you can always visit the Renegade website to check for other product offerings, or search visit the individual artist’s shop on

The store was inspired by the Renegade Craft Fair, an annual event celebrating handmade products and crafts. The original fair was held in Wicker Park in 2003. It then spread to Brooklyn in 2005 and San Francisco in 2008. This year, the fair is expanding to include the City of Angels, Los Angeles! The Chicago fair, held in September, will take over the entire stretch of West Division Street from Damen to Hermitage!

You can always find information on new products and events by visiting the Renegade blog!

Insider’s Tip:  As the summer kicks into high gear, there will be no shortage of summer parties and BBQ. Luckily for you, there are more and more houseware items arriving daily! Show your guests your artsy side by displaying the super cool Little Korboose plates decked out with bicycle illustrations ($16) or Rustbelt Fireworks’ screened fiber placemats ($36)!
