Raise a Glass to Autumn at Lynfred Winery

| October 22, 2009 | 2 Comments

On a dark and drizzly fall day, there is something comforting about a glass of wine. Red, white, sparkling, or even fruit-flavored, a glass of your favorite vintage and a roaring fireplace offer instant coziness. If you’re craving that cozy feeling and a wine-tasting adventure to boot, hop on the Metra or get in the car and take the brief trip to Roselle, Illinois, home of Lynfred Winery. Tucked away along a stretch of Roselle Road in this near northwest suburb, Lynfred Winery is an ivy-covered oasis that cranks out 25,000 cases of wine per year, and offers a hospitable escape to girlfriends, couples and oenophiles alike.

Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, Lynfred Winery was founded in 1979 by Fred and Lynn Koehler, making it the oldest and largest continuously operating winery in Illinois. Lynfred produces 50 different wine varietals, from grapes shipped in largely from California and Washington and handcrafted under the direction of winemakers Fred Koehler and Andres Basso. The award-winning wines range among red, white, sparkling, and fruit wine—a Midwestern favorite and one of Lynfred’s specialties.

Visitors will find a large, warm and inviting tasting room and extensive gift shop. With tastings starting at $9 for samples of 7 wines, poured by a knowledgeable staff member, a visit to the tasting room is an entertaining and economical way to learn about wine. You’re certain to leave with a bottle or two—perhaps the 2008 Chenin Blanc or “Fred’s Red,” a blend of red whine varietals. Lynfred’s wine club members can also enjoy exclusive events in the winery’s VIP room, such as food pairing events. Lynfred’s calendar is filled with wine events ranging from educational to decadent.

In addition, the winery operates a luxurious bed and breakfast that is truly a hidden gem. The luxurious accommodations in four suites, themed to different wine-drinking destinations, include in-room wine tasting and a gourmet breakfast. At prices rivaling downtown luxury hotels, but in a much more private and attentive atmosphere, Lynfred’s suites are a perfect destination for a special occasion stay.

Many events are planned this month to celebrate the winery’s 30th anniversary, including a Girls Night Out for breast cancer awareness on October 30th. For the very latest events and insights, check out the Lynfred Winery blog at http://lynfredwinery.blogspot.com/

Lynfred Winery is open for wine tasting 7 days a week, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and will offer extended hours between Thanksgiving and Christmas. It is located at 15 S. Roselle Road in Roselle, Illinois, within walking distance of the Roselle Metra station on the Milwaukee District/West Line. Telephone 888-298-WINE. www.lynfredwinery.com
