Quaker Go Project Gathering

| March 29, 2009 | 0 Comments

Quakers Go Project has launched and it is making a commitment to feed the hungry children all over the world by hitting communities and asking for volunteers to come join the effort.

On March 26, 2009 Chicagonista has joined in on this effort by gathering some volunteers to The Greater Chicago Food Depository and helped pack food for the hungry. This Food Depository distributes donated and purchased food through a network of food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters to adults and children every year.

It started with a little intro by the coordinator Milton Crane on how they work, and before you know it we were like a well-oiled machine. You would’ve never guessed that this was the first time for all of us. Thankfully, we were also joined by a group called Encore from the Old St. Pat’s Church who is quite known for their volunteer work in the community. In the end, we packed and finished 800 senior packs with a total weight of 10 tons that will be distributed to the seniors in the community.

3390798971_bf11d1a0e6Each senior pack we boxed will feed a person for 3 days. Inside were 2 cans of Pinto beans, 1 container of mayonnaise, 2 cans of sweet potatoes, 2 containers of Boost, 2 containers of applesauce, 1 package of oats, 2 containers of tuna, 2 boxes of macaroni and cheese, 3 bags of 100 calorie snacks and 2 packages of powdered milk.

It is safe to blame it on the economy that donations are down, and they have seen an increase in the number of people in need. Currently, the Food Depository is feeding 40,000 seniors and so you can imagine that they are in need of more food and volunteers. Don’t forget that the Quaker Go Project has other ways for all of you to help and you can continue in keeping up with Quaker through here:
