Looking for something different to do with the girls, or a surefire Mother’s Day gift? Women and chocolate go together like, well, women and chocolate (no explanation needed)! Add in a guided walking tour on some of Chicago’s most interesting streets, and you’ve got Chicago Chocolate Tours.
Founded in 2005 by native Chicagoan Valerie Beck, Chicago Chocolate Tours provides a fun and informative way to sample the city’s best chocolate shops while you walk off the calories. Chicago Chocolate Tours offers a number of public tour times and locations. Private tours are also available.
My girlfriends and I joined a scheduled tour of Magnificent Mile and Gold Coast chocolate shops. The tour started at 900 North Michigan, where we learned a little about the history of chocolate from our professional tour guide, Ellen, and then made our way up to Teuscher of Switzerland. Then it was on to More Cupcakes, Sarah’s Pastries and Candies, Frango at Macy’s/Water Tower, group favorite Leonidas Cafe Chocolaterie, and Argo Tea. At each location, we sampled some chocolate, made purchases if desired, and learned some tidbits about the history of chocolate as well as the specialties of each chocolatier.Check out some photos from our tour here, and you’ll see that some of the offerings are really quite artistic. The chocolate samples at each location left us feeling that we definitely indulged. But if you haven’t had enough chocolate, many of the stops offer shopping discounts to tour customers, so you can bring home a mouth-watering souvenir.
On May 8 – 9, Chicago Chocolate Tours will offer Flowers and Chocolate tours, which will include views of the tulip display along the Mag Mile, as well as extra chocolates and a flower for mom. If you can’t make this weekend’s tours, a gift certificate toward an upcoming tour would make a sweet Mother’s Day gift. Although pleasant spring weather certainly adds to the experience, these tours run year-round for die-hard chocolate fans. Public tours are $40; private tours are $50 per person. Group rates are available. Advance reservations are recommended. Contact Chicago Chocolate Tours, www.chicagochocolatetours.com 312-929-2939.
