Great Style, One Step at A Time

karynWalking into Bronzeville shoe retailer, Sensual Steps, is like diving into . The first thing you will notice is that everything is PINK! I’m talking more of a confident, all-grown-up hot pink, not the cotton candy hue you remember from childhood. The second thing that you will notice is the vast collection of shoes including stilettos, flats, and everything in between! The third thing is the friendly staff who will first offer you a warm greeting and then offer you lemonade (pink, of course) and cookies.

PhotobucketThis neighborhood gem opened four years ago on a stretch of South Cottage Grove aching for some style. And, ever since then, this shop has brought nothing but positive energy and amazing shoes to the South Side. The shop occupies two floors, which the main shoe gallery on the first floor and meeting space and mani/pedi stations on the lower level.

You can shop designs from Jeffrey Campbell, Luichiny, Pierre Dumas, Jessica Simpson, and more while in the store. And, if you’re wondering if the shoe comes in another color or fits true to size, don’t worry. The knowledgeable sales staff not only will answer any question that you may have, but they will also give you advice on your shoe selection like a great girlfriend.

Now, there are more than a few items with 4- and 5-inch heels, but if your stiletto days are done, don’t you worry. There are enough great flats to go around. Sensual Steps has a great variety of flat sandals, including the ever-so-popular gladiator style by designers such as Fuel and Agape.

To compliment all of those great shoes, I suggest browsing the unique collection of handbags and jewelry. There aren’t any plain, tried-and-true black or brown handbags. Here you will find plenty of bright colors and beadwork to add a vibrant splash to your any wardrobe. When it comes to jewelry, focus your attention on the checkout counter. It is flanked on both sides by two giant cases featuring wire rings, leather earrings, and gemstone bracelets, for all of your gazing and purchasing desires.

Now, if you can’t get to the store, the store will come to you! Always looking for new ways to keep their customers satisfied, Sensual Steps launched its “Heels on Wheels” program a few years ago. Here’s how it works. You pick out the shoe selection for your event and a sales representative will arrive at your house driving a hot pink Hummer. Then, you and your party guests will be treated to complimentary drinks, desserts, and more. You can even customize your party package to include services such as manicures and massages! I’m definitely adding this to my birthday celebration in October. What a great idea!

Throughout the year, the store hosts plenty of events ranging from fundraisers to parties. Not only do Nicole Jones and staff keep the walls buzzing, but they take that same energy out into the community. Sensual Steps is very active in the Bronzeville neighborhood and participates in local business councils and nonprofit groups, including their very own P.U.M.P.S. Mentoring group for high school girls.

Sensual Steps is part social club, and part shoe store. In my personal experience and from anecdotes from friends and family, it’s clear that we come to this pink oasis for the relaxed atmosphere just as much as we come to buy. The vibe in here is just fun and chic, and will not leave you disappointed. So, when you visit Sensual Steps, be prepared to shop, chat, and maybe even snack…From the hot pink popcorn machine, of course.
