Goebbert’s Pumpkin Farm

October 29, 2008 – Okay, so most of you probably already have your pumpkins carved, costumes ready and your trick-or-treat candy purchased and waiting. I only have one out of three! I just finished my son’s carrot costume this past weekend, and living in a large condo at least I’m off the hook for the candy, but we are just getting our pumpkin today! We have been pretty busy with all the fun to be had around town, and with the untimely rain…well, you get the gist. At least Goebbert’s is worth the wait.

Fast becoming our family tradition, Goebbert’s Pumpkin Farm is awesome. Located just south of I-90 in Hampshire IL, getting there from the city is a cinch and in about an hour, you can be transported to a mecca of fall fun! Children under 2 get in free, but they will still stamp their hands which is usually a big hit. Then it’s off to the pumpkins! You can pick your own in the fields, or stick to the piles of pre-picked pumpkins and gourds, but either way, your sure to find the perfect one. I really like how instead of just seeing pumpkins for sale at the grocery store or in an empty lot, my little guy can come to Goebbert’s and start to make the connection that these things come from the ground!

After the pumpkin business is taken care of, you and your family can have a blast on the grounds. There are so many fun activities, including a petting zoo, a haunted mine, pig races, wagon rides, munchkin and cornstalk mazes, and – get this – a pumpkin-eating dinosaur! Our son loves the animals and the mazes the best…until we head into the barn, where along with paying for your pumpkin choices you will be hard-pressed to escape without also getting at least an apple cider doughnut! In addition to the usual suspects like pies, apple butter, kettle corn and fudge, they also have a café where you can have an actual lunch.  The menu is on their web site, but we say their soups hit the spot.

So, if you are like me and got a little behind on the fall activity list, it’s not too late. Get out to Goebbert’s and have some fun making memories while you grab that special orange squash!
