Jewel Osco and Dominick’s are both making big strides into greening their stores inside and out and into our homes. 2 new Dominick’s will be opening this September in the North side of Chicago, and Jewel’s has been running their LEED certified store since 2008.

While Jewel upped the ante on selection and price against all other Chicagoland organic grocery stores, Dominick’s has taken conscious effort in building a family friendly store with spacious places to park strollers, rest, & eat and even have their family bathrooms situated beside it.

Up on top of the Desplaines Jewel store shows green vegetation and Dominick’s has used all eco-friendly materials to build their store including water efficient landscaping to using green screen that will minimize heat reflecting from the building out into the neighborhood, helping to reduce urban heat island effect. By the end of the year Dominick’s has announced that 54 out of their 79 stores will reflect their emphasis on building green stores.

Both stores has given parking priorities on customers driving low-emission and fuel-efficient cars, and are running programs on having convenient placements where customers can drop off their bags to be recycled.

For the most part, people shop where it’s convenient from their homes and just to know that we have more options to choose from is a big plus for all Chicagoans.
