Chicago Teacher Makes The Grade

December 1, 2008- I love the idea that I am teaching my children something when they are home all day with me. However, I admit, I am often stumped about the specifics of instructing toddlers. I suppose you could say we worked on calender usage when I told them the garbage truck comes by on Tuesday or had science class when I told them – again – to stop eating crayons. But, I am striving for a little more focused approach. My mother, a teacher for many years, suggested I check out the local teacher supply store. So, into Chicago Teacher I went.

The Chicago Teacher store in Bucktown located at 1833 North Milwaukee Ave. in Chicago seems like an unlikely place for the average parent to shop; however, I highly recommend checking it out. Even though it is designed with educators in mind it is a veritable treasure trove for parents with children of any age looking for gifts that will entertain throughout the year.

Getting there was easy and street parking during the day was a breeze. They had a whole section of teacher’s manuals, including pre-K, which were full of daily activities that I could do with my children that were learning based and still fun. They had art supplies, classroom decorations, responsibility charts, and learning tools for math, science, reading and writing.

The owner’s father was manning the store the day my children and I visited. He was so helpful and welcoming and gave me a bunch of ideas on integrating learning into everyday life. I am heading back to the store to pick up some adorable posters for counting to 100 and learning the alphabet. Maybe if I hang them in the kitchen we can talk math and letters during lunch instead of what will happen if they drop their food on the ground – again.

Make sure and check out Chicago Teacher next time you are looking to give the gift of learning. For more information, please contact Chicago Teacher at 773-252-8200.
